Helping you to make that vital connection

What Is Cultural Competence?

Every human being is a member of many cultures. Culture influences an individual’s health beliefs, practices, behaviors, and even the outcome of medical treatments. Because of this, health care providers must learn about the culture. We must try to become culturally competent. Cultural competence in health care is defined as the ability of individuals and systems to respond respectfully and effectively to people of all cultures in a manner that affirms the worth and preserves the dignity of individuals, families, and communities. Cultural competence is important in every aspect of our public lives. But it is a critical skill for health care providers, who deal daily with diverse people in life-and-death situations.

To be culturally competent, Cloud Home Healthcare takes cultural considerations in treatment planning and services. Our clients are specifically matched with providers that understand their cultural background. If we feel that cultural background may be a barrier, we will consult with other providers and professionals to confirm it is not a barrier to treatment.

We ensure that staff members are capable of implementing culturally specific services that are culturally competent and appropriate as determined by the recipient’s culture, beliefs, values, and language as identified in the individual treatment plan. We will match each client with an ARMHS practitioner that speaks their native language and one which they can identify themselves with thus creating a conducive environment for the client. We currently have qualified mental health practitioners and professionals who speak fluently in different languages, including but not limited to; English, Somali, Kiswahili, Russian, Arabic, Hmong, Karen, Nuer, Dinka, Oromo, Amharic.

To be an effective culturally competent provider, Cloud Home Healthcare makes sure that;

  • The staff has the knowledge to make an accurate health assessment, one which takes into consideration a patient’s background and culture;
  • Staff can convey that assessment to the patient, recognize culture-based beliefs about health and devise treatment plans which respect those beliefs; and
  • We are willing to incorporate models of health and health care delivery from a variety of cultures into the mental health system.

And as a provider, we are committed to acknowledging culture’s profound effect on health outcomes, and we should be willing to learn more about this powerful interaction. And we are dedicated to researching and learning from expert recommendations to help us in our journey towards becoming a more culturally competent provider.
